A FISHERMAN has been bitten on the foot by a grey nurse shark at Broughton Island, north of Port Stephens.

Jim Booth, who runs Kunara Fishing Charters, said the injured man had been in the water picking up a fish about 4pm on Saturday when the shark grabbed his left foot.

Mr Booth said grey nurse sharks, often referred to as the ‘‘Labradors of the sea’’, were not typically known to attack humans.

Shark nets urged to protect baths

The incident follows numerous recent shark sightings off the Hunter coastline, and the attack of tattoo artist Glen Folkard at Redhead Beach in January.

The man injured in the most recent attack sailed back to Nelson Bay and had his wound treated and bandaged at Tomaree Hospital.

He went to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment, but his injury in not believed to be serious.
