WA shark attack caught on film as surfer ‘rescued himself’ by swimming 600m

A West Australian surfer is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a white shark off Margaret River on Monday morning and swimming 600 metres to shore while bleeding.

The man, aged in his 20s, was bitten on his leg at the boat ramp surfing spot near Gnarabup Beach around 8.45am.

A white shark was spotted in the area shortly after the attack, with authorities quickly closing the surrounding beaches.

The man managed to paddle to shore where he was tended to by a nurse who was dining at a beach café before being rushed to Margaret River Hospital by fellow surfers.

A witness told 9 News Perth the man “saved his own life” by bravely making it back to shore, despite losing a lot of blood.

The surfer was later transferred to Bunbury Hospital and is in a stable condition.

Since the incident, beaches between Gas Bay and Margaret River Mouth have been closed.

Authorities have warned visitors to the area to take additional caution in the Gnarabup and Prevelly area.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is working with local authorities to coordinate responses.
