Swimmer attacked by shark at nude beach in Hawaii
BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Wildlife officials on Wednesday confirmed that the swimmer who was bitten on his foot while swimming in a remote area of the Big Island was attacked by a shark.
The man, 54, was in the water Tuesday morning at the clothing-optional Kehena Beach. He told emergency responders that he was wearing fins, and the shark ripped off one of the fins, injuring his ankle.
The swimmer waved for help, and other beachgoers assisted him back to shore. He was about 100 yards offshore at the time, in turbid water.
Officials from the DLNR Divisions of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and Aquatic Resources (DAR) investigated and now say his injuries are consistent with a shark bite. Warning signs were posted at Kehena Beach.
This is the eighth shark attack in Hawaii so far this year and the second statewide in less than a week. On Oct. 28, a ten-year-old boy was bitten by a shark while bodyboarding at Makaha Beach on Oahu. He suffered serious injuries to his leg, but is making a fast recovery.
Two other swimmers were also bitten by sharks in waters off Oahu during the month of October.
The only fatal shark attack to occur in Hawaii this year was off of Maui. On April 29, a 65-year-old woman was killed while snorkeling in Ahihi Bay. She was in 20- to 35-foot-deep water, and was about 200 yards offshore.
