West Palm Beach shark dive expedition leader attacked by shark in Bahamas

WEST END, Bahamas -- A U.S. Coast Guard jayhawk helicopter has flown a West Palm Beach charter dive operator from the islands to St. Mary's Medical Center after the man was attacked by a shark.
The Coast Guard confirms a 55-year-old shark bite victim was picked up from a charter vessel north of West End, Bahamas, due east of Palm Beach. Jim Abernethy, 55, was on a diving excursion with his 65-foot diving vessel Shear Water when he was bitten on the arm.
Abernethy operates a scuba diving operation in West Palm Beach that offers shark and dolphin experience dives.
According to Abernethy's website, the Shear Water was on a week-long shark expedition, diving for tiger and great hammerhead sharks that departed Jan. 21 and was scheduled to return Jan. 27.

Abernethy was reported to be conscious and responsive and at about 6 PM St. Mary's reported him in good condition.
