On Wednesday July 13th 2022 at 7:30pm the Suffolk County Park Rangers, Smith Point Beach First Aid Squad, Smith Point Beach Ocean Rescue Team sprang into action after a person surfing was bite by a shark. Mastic Beach Ambulance Company was requested to the scene to transport the shark attack victim. Suffolk County Parks Department quickly put a notice that Smith Point Beach was closed to swimming until further notice. Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Service Drone Team was requested to the scene to try and get heat signatures of the shark in the water. Shirley Community Ambulance Company transported the surfer to a local hospital there injuries. Smith Point Beach Ocean Rescue Team has a Jetski in the water patrolling for the shark aswell as Life Guards patrolling the coast line. First responders did state the surfer had a 4 inch gash on his leg and it was identified by the victim to be a 4 foot tiger shark. Swimming at Smith Point Beach was reopened at 1:30pm.
An Arizona man was hit from behind July 13, off Seaview Beach. The unidentified man was standing in waist-deep water around 8:00 p.m. when a shark bit his left wrist and buttocks. The 49-year-old was able to make it back to the beach, but due to the severity of the wounds, was airlifted to a nearby hospital with nonthreatening injuries.
