Shark bites kitesurfer's board off Kanaha Beach
Maui County lifeguards closed waters off Kanaha Beach Park Tuesday afternoon after a shark attacked a kiteboarder's board, officials said.
Emergency dispatch operators received the call around 2:45 p.m.
The kitesurfer's board was bitten near Kaa Point, said Deborah Ward, spokeswoman for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Officers with the department's Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement and Maui County lifeguards were responding to the scene, she said.
The lifeguards and state enforcement officers were patrolling the area on personal watercraft, and they were keeping people out of the ocean for a mile in either direction of the attack, said Maui County spokesman Ryan Piros.
The waters off Kanaha Beach Park will remain off limits until officials can reassess whether there have been any further shark sightings Wednesday morning, Piros said.
No injuries were reported. There was no information on what type of shark bit the kitesurfer's board.
