Girl, 10, victim of apparent shark bite in Cocoa Beach

A 10-year-old girl at the beach in foot-deep water screamed after an apparent shark bite Saturday near Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach.

Beachgoers immediately responded to help the girl out of the water at about 1:30 p.m. She had two puncture wounds in the area of her right foot and ankle, officials said.

A Brevard County lifeguard treated the victim's injuries before she was taken by Brevard County Fire Rescue paramedics to Cape Canaveral Hospital, according to Eisen Witcher, Brevard County Ocean Rescue assistant chief.

The beach was closed after the incident for at least an hour as a precaution.

Officials had no information about the size or type of shark involved in the incident.

The girl's injuries were considered non-life threatening.
