10-year-old bitten by shark at Folly Beach

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. - A Charleston boy is recovering after being bitten multiple times by a shark Wednesday afternoon on Folly Beach, according to a report by our South Carolina sister station WCBD.

The incident happened just after 2:00 p.m. near East Ashley Avenue, said Fire Chief Steve Mims at Folly Beach Public Safety.

The victim, Riley Harris, 10, was boogy boarding in the shallow part of the beach when he was bitten several times on his ankle and foot. He told officials that he believes it was a 4-to-5 feet long bull shark, according to Fire Chief Mims. However, that has not yet been confirmed.

WCBD spoke with officials who told them that no one else encountered the shark or even saw it during the attack. Harris was taken to the hospital where his father told Affiliate Reporter Megan Dice the boy was treated overnight. Dice also went back to the beach after the incident and got reaction from beach goers.

"It is kind of scary. I still like the ocean. So I probably won't go too far out there," said tourist Kaelin Toney.

Folly Beach gets about one-to-two shark bites each year, but this is the first incident so far this year, said public safety officials.
