A 17-year-old girl from Mims became the first shark-bite victim in Volusia County for 2009, officials said Thursday.

"It was a three-Band-Aid shark bite," Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said.

The girl was bitten while surfing, he said, south of Ponce de Leon Inlet's south jetty about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"This is where all the surfers go for the best waves, and this is where all the bites occur," Petersohn said.

Last year was a record year in Volusia County with 24 reported attacks, the highest annual total since 2001.

The first 2008 shark bite was recorded Feb. 17.

April is the month when the conditions are ripe for a large number of shark bites because of the large runs of bait fish, murky water and big waves, Petersohn said.
