Shark bites surfer near south jetty

A Lake Mary surfer was the victim of mistaken identity this afternoon when a 4-foot shark grabbed his right leg off New Smyrna Beach - the eighth shark bite of the year, officials said.

The 18-year-old man, who was not identified by the Volusia County Beach Patrol, suffered only minor injuries, including a bump on the shin where the shark hit him and lacerations to the back of the calf and the front of the shin.

He was one of about 300 surfers who came to "the point," about 300 yards south of the south jetty, to take advantage of the Veterans Day holiday and spectacular waves, Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said.

"He was in 4 to 5 feet of water," Petersohn said. "(The water) was very murky, with baitfish and birds everywhere. It has all the signs of mistaken identity."

The teen was treated on the beach by lifeguards and EVAC Ambulance paramedics, but friends drove him to the hospital, Petersohn said.
