NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Two minor shark bites 10 minutes apart summoned rescue workers to an area just south of the South Jetty this morning, according to EVAC spokesman Mark O'Keefe.

Both victims were among a large crowd surfing 5- to 6-foot waves in the area where 90 percent of Volusia County's shark bites occur, according to Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman Scott Petersohn. Neither victim required ambulance service.

The first victim, a 55-year-old Sanford man, suffered a bite to his right hand at about 9:20 a.m., surfing about 100 yards from the shoreline near the 2700 block of North Ocean Beach. EVAC was summoned to the scene but the man drove himself to a hospital, Petersohn said. He suffered cuts to his fingers and the top of his hand.

The second victim was a 49-year-old man from Southeast Volusia who was bitten on his right foot. When he stepped off his board, he felt the bite. EVAC was already on the scene for the first call, but he also sought medical treatment on his own, O'Keefe said.

The incidents were the third and fourth shark bites of 2009, Petersohn said.
