Surfer is attacked by a shark at one of Sydney's most popular beaches - just weeks after a man was mauled to death by a great white

A shark fin was spotted just metres from a lifeguard only moments after a surfer was attacked at a busy Sydney beach on Tuesday morning.

The surfer was not injured by the shark, but the beast managed to grip onto his board, leaving large bite marks.

The incident at Maroubra took place at 7:50am when the eastern suburbs beach was closed due to dangerous surf conditions.

Lifeguards rushed to help the shocked surfer to shore where he was checked over but fortunately he had escaped all injury.

The lifeguards then returned to the water on jetskis to check the area for danger.

A local videoing the scene captured the dramatic moment when what seemed to be a shark fin broke through the water just metres away from one of the lifeguards.

It appeared to make a beeline for one of the lifeguards before disappearing under the surface again.

'Lifeguards cleared the water following the incident,' a spokesman for Randwick City Council added.

'Maroubra Beach is closed due to dangerous surf conditions. Enquiries are ongoing.'

On Sunday, a swimmer was rammed by a 3.5 metre great white shark 150 metres offshore from Melros Beach in Perth's south, but also escaped unscathed.

It comes almost three weeks after British expat Simon Nellist was mauled to death by a 4.5 metres great white shark during his daily swim off Little Bay in Sydney's east.

It was the first fatal shark attack in Sydney in almost six decades.

Animal welfare expert Lawrence Chlebuck said most shark bites on humans were as a result of them mistaking them for seals.

'Normally they bite something to figure out what it is,' he said. 'Once they realise it's a person and not a normal prey item, they take off.

'The vast majority of shark bites are a "one and done" occurrence.'

He said most great white shark bites were juveniles, and were seeking the energy from seal blubber to sustain their hunter-killer lifestyle.

'They are still trying to figure out their changing diet as they switch from fish, as young sharks, to seals and marine mammals,' he said.

'Great white sharks are obviously large predators that expend a lot of energy so they need a lot of high energy food and the blubber of a seal is perfect for that.

'Skinny little bony human beings are not - and that's why we are not a normal prey item.'
