Fatal shark attack at Little Bay, after fisherman swept off rocks

A shark attack has claimed the life of a swimmer at a popular Sydney beach.

Authorities were called to Little Bay Beach, in Sydney’s south-east, shortly before 5pm on Wednesday.

It’s understood half of a wetsuit and partial human remains were located in the water.

Police officers attended alongside the Marine Area Command and Surf Life Saving NSW.

Little Bay Beach was closed as officers searched the area.

A witness told 7NEWS the rocky area where people went fishing was treacherous.

“You get people who are not from the area, and they go about half a mile up around the point, off the third green. There’s big fish around there, that’s why they go there,” he said.

“Unfortunately, they don’t know the currents around here.”

Others along the beach told 7NEWS the shark was as large as four metres long.

Four ambulance crews and a rescue helicopter with a critical care doctor and paramedic were dispatched to the scene.

However, there was nothing they could do.

“Unfortunately, this person had suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the attack and there was nothing paramedics could do when we arrived on scene,” Ambulance NSW Inspector Lucky Phrachanh said.

Police say they will work with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Community ‘in shock’

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said the community had been rattled by the incident.

“The coast is our community’s backyard,” he said.

“Little Bay is normally such a calm, beautiful place enjoyed by families.

“To lose someone to a shark attack like this is chilling.”

Mr Parker said everyone was in shock and extended condolences to those affected.

“Our entire community’s hearts go out to the family of the victim,” he said.

The council has shut all Randwick City beaches - including Little Bay, Malabar, Maroubra, Coogee, Clovelly and La Perouse - for 24 hours following the attack.

Lifeguards will also patrol over that period to look for any further shark sightings.

The mauling is the first fatal shark attack in the local government area in recent memory, the council says.

A 55-year-old swimmer found herself lucky to be alive after she was bitten by a suspected white shark at Little Congwong Beach, further south in Botany Bay in 2018.
