An 8-year-old girl was attacked by a shark in Brazil and had to be operated

An 8 year old girl was attacked by a shark in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, in northern Brazil. The animal bit her right leg and she had to undergo surgery.

The attack occurred in Praia do Sueste and the girl was rushed in the back of a car to Hospital São Lucas, from where she was taken to Recife by plane. According to the island’s administration, the little girl was admitted to the hospital in serious condition, although they managed to stabilize it.

“All the necessary procedures were carried out, including blood transfusion, to guarantee the stability of the patient, who was transferred by air rescue to a private hospital in Recife,” they indicated from the Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio), which administers the island.

In the statement, ICMBio said it stands in solidarity with the girl and her family and that “attacks of this type are rare.”

The testimony of a sailor about the shark attack on an eight-year-old girl in Brazil

Sailor Alex Vitor, who witnessed the attack, told the newspaper Journal of Commerce that the girl lost her leg.

“She was bathing at the edge of the beach. We had our backs turned when, out of nowhere, the screaming began, we could already see the blood in the area. He was with his father, who started screaming,” he said.

According to news website LOU, ICMBio reported that the The beach will remain closed indefinitely to “avoid disturbances.” “The reopening of the attraction will depend on an institutional analysis based on a better understanding of the facts that generated the accident,” they specified.

Other shark attacks in the area

According Or Balloon, this is not the first time that an attack of this type has occurred in Praia do Sueste. The first official recorded attack on the island was in 2015, when a surfer was surprised by a shark that tore off his hand and part of his leg.

In December 2016, a tourist “collided” with a shark and suffered minor injuries. In 2017, a tourist tried to pick up a baby shark by hand to take a selfie and had to get stitches.
In February 2019, an island native surfing at Cacimba do Padre beach sustained injuries to his face, neck and ear after being bitten by a lemon shark. In May of the same year, a 12-year-old boy’s toe was severed by a lemon shark while he was fishing with a hook.

In March 2020, a surfer received some stitches after being attacked in Praia do Bode. That same year, a man suffered foot injuries after an attack. Finally, in 2021, a 53-year-old man also needed stitches after a shark attack.
The rain could favor the attack

The fishing engineer Paulo Guilherme Oliveira, coordinator of the Professor Fabio Hazin Environmental Education Center, of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), explained to the Journal of Commerce that the rainy weather this Friday could have influenced the attack.

“Rain events cloud the water more. So the predator goes unnoticed by prey, who can’t see it,” he explained.

He also stressed that the beach where the attack occurred is one of the most frequented by bathers in Noronha, and that it is a “shallow place, with many reefs and with turtles that are part of the diet of sharks”.

Oliveira also argued that the increase in tourist exploitation in the area may be influencing the behavior of the species. “We are talking about an archipelago where there are sharks and where the frequency of people increases every day.

The greater the number of people in the area, the greater the probability of attacks. The increase in tourism can also influence some pressure on the environment,” he commented.
