Woman bitten in suspected shark attack at popular South West surfing spot

A 46-year-old woman is being treated by emergency crews after she was bitten in the foot by a suspected shark at a beach in Western Australia’s South West.

The attack occurred just after 10.30am at Gracetown Beach, near Margaret River, a popular destination among surfing enthusiasts.
The beach has been closed following the incident.

The woman is believed to have been bitten while swimming through a weedy area about 50 metres offshore and has since been taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of minor foot injuries.

Gracetown Beach has been closed off to the public by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River rangers for the remainder of the day.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is investigating the incident as Surf Life Saving WA teams conduct aerial patrols of the area.

Margaret River police and St John Ambulance crews have also been deployed to the scene, and a helicopter has combed the area in search of the shark.

In a statement, a DPIRD spokesman urged people to take caution in the Gracetown area and to obey beach closures by local rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers, and SLSWA staff.

“If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app, and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed,” he said.

Authorities suspect the species responsible for the bite could be a wobbegong, the common name given to carpet sharks.

Located just north of Margaret River, Gracetown is a popular destination among surfers. The town is home to the world-renowned Cow Bombie surf area, where waves can reach up to 40 feet in height.

The attack comes just two weeks after Perth man Cameron Wrathall was bitten in the leg by a bull shark while swimming with friend Richard O’Brien in the Swan River.

Mr Wrathall, an avid swimmer and family man, remains in a very serious condition in hospital, where he is being treated for a broken hip and nerve damage.
