A man has tragically been killed in a shark attack at a popular beach in Western Australia.

The swimmer, 55, was attacked at Cable Beach in Broome, on the northwest coast of Western Australia, just before 8.45am on Sunday morning.

WA Police said the man was recovered from the water and treated by local police officers before paramedics from St John Ambulance arrived.

It is understood the swimmer was 2km north of the Cable Beach rocks and lost his hand in the attack, The West Australian reported.

The man was also bitten on his upper thigh.

Cable Beach has been closed to the public and is expected to remain shut for 24 hours.

It is also understood the shark was shot but was not killed.

Broome Shire president Harold Tracey said the attack had been 'a shock' for the local community.

'It's also surprising where it happened, it's quite a popularised beach,' he explained.

'Obviously, any time something like this happens it's a concern. It's a bit of a reminder to us that we share the water with all kinds of creatures.'

Surf Life Saving WA lifesaving coordinator Nick Pavy said Broome's SLSC services had concluded in October.

'We remind people to choose a patrolled beach where they can and swim between the red and yellow flags under the watchful eye of our lifesavers and lifeguards, to swim with a friend, and always to keep an eye on children around the water.

The Department of Primary Industries said it had been notified and was investigating and working with local authorities to coordinate a responses to the attack.

'Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA,' a DPIRD statement said.

'Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA's Twitter feed.'

Beachgoers were urged to report any shark sightings to the Water Police.
