HORRIFYING ORDEAL Teen survives shark attack after his father kicks the 5-foot beast when it bit into his son off the North Carolina coast

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy has lived to tell the tale after a shark attacked him just 25 feet from the shore off the coast of North Carolina.

Nick Arthur was swimming at Cape Hatteras on Thursday when he felt a five-foot shark rip into his thigh and watched as the water turned red with his blood.

Nick said he didn't know what was grabbing his leg at first because the water was clouded with blood and sand.

"My hands were bleeding. There was just lots of blood and sand, all mixed together. I couldn't really see what was going on," he told KMVT11.

"My fingers were all scratched up because I was trying to pry its mouth open."

Nick added: "The pressure was so intense, I was like 'this is an animal of some sort.

"I didn’t know what it was, so I tried lifting my leg up out of the water and I saw – oh, my God – it’s a 5-foot-long shark attached to my leg".

Nick's sister immediately swam to shore for help.

But it was his father Tim Arthur who rushed into the water to fight off the predator after hearing his son screaming for help.

"At first I thought he was screaming out of joy, and then I looked at him and saw the shark," Tim told CNN.

Tim said he furiously kicked and punched the shark until it finally released its grip from around Nick's thigh and swam away."He was screaming 'Get it off me. Let me go' and I jumped into action," Tim recalled.

"I don't think we did anything special but it was enough that it maybe realized there was easier prey out there".

Nick was immediately rushed to hospital where doctors used 17 stitches to repair the wounds on his leg and hands.

His father said they counted more than 40 bite wounds on his body.
