A surfer was found being devoured by three sharks by Australian emergency crews who were searching for another missing diver.

Eric Birighitti's remains were found off the Western Australia coast two days ago.

The 21-year-old footballer had gone missing five days earlier and is feared to have slipped while walking along Twilight Beach with his friends.

Rescuers had been searching for the body of 57-year-old Gary Johnson, who was attacked by a great white while scuba diving with his wife.

As rescuers searched for Mr Johnson, they found three sharks feeding on a human corpse which they believed to be the older man's but proved to be that of Mr Birighitti.

The 21-year-old from Perth was on holiday with friends when he fell into the water at Twilight Beach on January 2, The West reported.

Friends desperately attempted to pull him in but the current was too strong and he was swept out to sea.

Police launched an extensive search for the 21-year-old, with the search ending when his body was found in the water off Twilight Beach on Tuesday.

The search for Mr Johnson's remains had begun on Sunday when he was mauled by a great white near Cull Island, close to West Beach in Esperance.

Only Mr Johnson's tank, vest and flippers were found during days of extensive searches that included two remotely-operated vehicles to scouring the ocean floor.

Mr Johnson's wife was in the water with him when he was attacked and managed to put out a mayday call. She was later treated in hospital for shock.

In an emotional statement following his death, she described Mr Johnson as her 'rock' and said he was at home in the ocean.

'We were always aware of the risks and often told each other that if we were attacked by a shark that would just be unlucky,' she said.

'We were completely against shark culling and I still am.'

Mr Birighitti was a promising young footballer with a scholarship to play football at Hastings College in Nebraska and St Thomas Aquina College in New York.

He left a poignant message in his tragic final Instagram post: 'Merry Christmas everyone! As we finish off 2019, I hope everybody finds peace and is filled with love as the new year begins.'

'Shout out to all those who cannot be with us for whatever reason,' he wrote.

'Remember to love always, be appreciative and smile.'

The Hastings Broncos team took to social media to mourn the young star's death.

'The Bronco family are saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Eric Birighitti,' they wrote.

'Eric played for Hastings during the 2016 and 2017 season and won a national title with the team.

'He will be truly missed and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.'

Friends have taken to the 21-year-old's social media to post about the tragic loss.

'I love you, Eric. Promise to live life to the fullest in honour of you and to stay kind,' one person wrote.

'Rest in peace Eric,' another said.

'You were truly one of the most sweet people. you are such a special soul. Fly high up there.'

Mr Johnson was president of the Esperance Dive Club and wrote on social media in 2017 that he wore a shark protection device because it gave him peace of mind.

He was reportedly wearing the device at the time of the attack but had not activated it.

The state government does not support a shark cull but Western Australia fisheries minister Peter Tinley has not ruled out ordering the killing of rogue sharks found repeatedly at popular beaches.

Mr Tinley has indicated that lights and sirens will also be installed at beaches in Esperance to alert beachgoers to shark detections.

In a statement on Monday, Ms Milligan described Mr Johnson as her rock and said he was at home in the ocean.

'We were always aware of the risks and often told each other that if we were attacked by a shark that would just be unlucky,' she said.
