Surfer's lucky escape after shark takes huge bite out of board

A surfer has had a lucky escape after a shark took a huge bite out of his board at a Queensland beach on Thursday.

Brad Highlands wrote on Facebook his friend was surfing at Woorim on Bribie Island.

“A surfing buddy was knocked off his board while waiting for a wave to come his way,” he wrote.

“He's shaken pretty bad but otherwise all is OK.”

He added his friend will “stick to the swimming pool for a few days”.

Dorsal Shark Reports registered a shark sighting at the beach off Eighth Avenue at Woorim on Thursday about 11am.

A Surf Life Saving Queensland spokeswoman told Yahoo News Australia lifeguards are aware of the surfer’s claim but no shark has been found.

“We heard about the surfer’s account secondhand while closing the beach yesterday afternoon,” she said.

“We’re not sure when the incident happened but patrol couldn’t find any sharks.”

As there was no confirmation of a shark sighting, Woorim’s beach remained open on Friday.

On Facebook, people were shocked by the pics.

“Yikes, that's a very close call,” one woman wrote.

Another added they are just relieved the surfer is OK.
