Jamaica Fatal Shark Attack -

Former Jamaica Davis Cup player Nicholas Malcolm missing, feared dead

Former Jamaica tennis player Nicholas Malcolm has been reported missing and is feared dead after he went fishing at sea on Wednesday and did not return.

His family has expressed concern about his well-being after blood-stained fragments of his gear, his spear gun, flippers and phone were found at sea near a fishing village between Oracabessa and Galina in St. Mary early Thursday.

According to his worried wife, Malcolm went fishing with a friend, Marvin Brown on Wednesday but did not return. Concerned, she called his phone but he did not answer which increased her worry, she said.

She said she kept on calling because sometimes his phone is set to ‘silent’ and she would sometimes get home to see him asleep. However, her concern turned to real worry Thursday morning when his belongings and fragments of his clothing were found on the beach.

Malcolm, a lefthander, was considered one of the most talented players ever to come out of Jamaica. He first played Davis Cup for Jamaica in 1993 alongside Karl Hale and Peter Campbell when Jamaica defeated Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Costa Rica before losing to Guatemala.

He last played in the Davis Cup in 1999 on a Jamaican team that defeated Antigua and Barbuda but lost to Panama and the Netherland Antilles.

During his seven-year run in the Davis Cup, he had a singles record of three wins and nine losses but boasted a doubles record of nine wins and seven losses.

Friends and colleagues said Malcolm, who was based in Ocho Rios, coached occasionally. The unavailability of courts hampered his coaching career and turned to spearfishing to support his family.
