COCOA BEACH — A 28-year-old woman was bitten by a shark while wading in waist-deep water in the Atlantic Ocean off Cocoa Beach Sunday.

"She was about waist deep in the water when she got bit on the ankle. We were able to administer care to her," said Chief Jeff Scabarozi, Brevard County Ocean Rescue.

The woman, who was not identified, was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in nearby Melbourne by ambulance. It was not immediately known what type of shark bit the woman. "But there's a plethora of sharks in the area. Bull sharks, black tip, spinners," Scabarozi said.

That portion of the beach is also typically not as crowded as other areas, he said.

The incident was one of several rescues to take place along Brevard County beaches Sunday. "We had 11 rescues today. The swells weren't that bad, which made it more inviting for swimmers," the chief said.

The woman's encounter with the sea predator came just days after a shark bit a 10-year-old boy off a scenic Hawaiian beach.

The boy was bit Wednesday at Oahu's Makaha Beach Park in Hawaii's seventh confirmed shark encounter of 2015, state statistics show. The average number of shark bites per year has doubled In Hawaii over the past decade, but scientists say that's because there are more people in the water, providing more opportunities for encounters. There has been an average of about nine shark bites per year over the past five years.

Also in October, 25-year-old Oahu man lost his left leg to a shark attack while surfing off Oahu's North Shore, according to local media reports.

Colin Cook was straddling his board with both legs dangling in the water on Oct. 9 when the 10- to 12-foot shark latched onto his lower leg, media reports said. He punched the animal until it let go, screamed for help and was assisted to shore by another surfer and a kayaker, his family told reporters.

A few days earlier, a shark bit a 13-year-old boy off the coast of Galveston, Texas.

Gregory Slaughter, 13, and his brother were swimming Oct. 5 when they were surrounded by a school of fish, according to Galveston Beach Patrol officials. The two boys were frightened and began swimming to shore when a shark bit the 13-year-old on the lower leg and hand.

Officials said it was the first shark bite in Texas in more than a year.

In September a 12-year-old Georgia boy was attacked by a shark in Fernandina Beach, Fla., according to the Fernandina Beach Police Department.

Police said the 12-year-old was wading in waist-deep water Sept. 21 when he felt something bite around his knee. That's when he saw a shark and began punching it as it bit him a second time.

The boy's parents told police their son was walking in 2 to 3 feet of water when they heard him begin screaming "shark."

Joshua Bitner, the boy's father, said he saw a 4-foot shark with a black tip on its dorsal fin thrashing nearby in the water.

The boy was then pulled out of the water by beachgoers and treated at the scene for open lacerations.
