Teen active in healing process after shark attack
It's been nearly 2 weeks since a shark clamped down on his leg, leaving it severely injured

It has been almost two weeks since a teen boy fought for his life during a shark attack off Surfside Beach.

The shark clamped down on 15-year-old Garrett Sebesta's leg, leaving it severely injured.

Sebesta was attacked by a shark on June 17, while swimming with friends.

The family would like to protect Sebesta's privacy as he recovers.

KPRC Local 2 heard from Sebesta's mom Friday morning.

His mother granted Local2 permission to publish brand new photos of Sebesta at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital.

His left arm and left leg are bandaged.

According to the family, he was scheduled for a minor surgery Friday.

Sebesta is expected to be in a regular hospital room for the rest of his stay at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The family wants everyone to know that Sebesta is very active in his healing process and there hasn't been a moment where he's considered giving up.

Sebesta always held strong to his faith and his recovery.

Sebesta and his family would like every one to know, "How touched we are by the continuous support Garrett and his family have received from the community. There truly are no words to express our thanks and gratitude."

Family friends are putting together a benefit to help pay for Sebesta's medical expenses.

The benefit will take place later this Summer.

Shark attacks at Surfside: 15-year-old fights against shark, survives

The shark attack at Surfside Beach has made 15-year-old Garrett Sebesta a hero. "Kudos to the victim ‘cause he felt the shark bite, and then he literally tore the shark off of him,” said one of the paramedics who was among the first to appear at the shark attack scene at Surfside Beach in Texas on Monday afternoon, according to a KHOU Houston Texas report on June 17, 2013.

Following the shark attack at Surfside Beach, which is about 60 miles south of Houston, 15-year-old Garrett Sebesta was conscious and talking when he was loaded onto a stretcher by paramedics and flown by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

“Paramedics called Life Flight because they wanted to ensure that surgeons could try to give the Needville teen complete use of his injured hand.”

According to the video report, the shark attack at Surfside Beach happened when 15-year-old Garrett Sebesta was with his church group by Surfside Beach around 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

The 15-year-old was standing waist-deep in water when he was all of a sudden attacked by a shark who bit his leg. In trying to get the shark off, the 15-year-old grabbed the shark with his hands resulting in a shark bite into his left hand. Because of the boy’s fight against the shark, the shark let go and disappeared back into deeper waters.

“The 15-year-old started beating the shark with both hands after it had bitten his lower left leg, according to Surfside Assistant Police Chief Gregg Bisso. The shark then bit the teen on the left hand. Kids from his church group, who were in the water with him, came to his aid after he’d been bitten, Bisso said. A Surfside police officer was at scene at the time and helped bandage the teen.”

According to the teen’s mom, her son has severe nerve damage in his hand and a big chunk of his calf is missing but he is expected to survive.

According to shark expert Roy Drinnen, a shark attack like the shark attack at Surfside can happen anywhere along the coast. In the video report about the shark attack at Surfside Beach, Roy Drinnen provides some useful advice about not wearing light colored or silver clothes while at a beach that might have sharks.

After 15-year-old Garrett Sebesta fully recovers, he might add some other useful tip about what to do when a shark attacks you – fight.

Shark attacks Texas teen in waist-deep water

(CNN) -- A shark attacked a teenager Monday afternoon as he swam in waist-deep water at Surfside Beach, along Texas's Gulf coast, local police said.

The 15-year-old started beating the shark with both hands after it had bitten his lower left leg, according to Surfside Assistant Police Chief Gregg Bisso. The shark then bit the teen on the left hand. Kids from his church group, who were in the water with him, came to his aid after he'd been bitten, Bisso said. A Surfside police officer was at scene at the time and helped bandage the teen.

The boy was flown to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, where he was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Bisso said.

It wasn't immediately clear what type of shark attacked the teen. However, Bisso said there haven't been any shark attacks along Surfside Beach city limits, a 5-mile long barrier island, in 25 years. Brazoria County, which includes Surfside Beach, has had at least two attacks in the past four years, though.

Surfside Beach is about 65 miles south of Houston.
