BOCA CIEGA BAY - A 19-year-old woman is in emergency surgery after an apparent shark attack in Pinellas County.

It reportedly happened around 3 p.m. behind a home at Boca Ciega Bay at 7015 Boca Ceiga Drive.

According to the St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue public information officer Ernie Hand, the victim was swimming in the intracoastal waterway behind her home when she was bitten on the right leg from above the knee down to the calf.

"She suffered a substitute bite to the right leg, it was below the knee to the lower part of the calf, serious, but not life threatening," Hand said.

Authorities said the bite marks were consistent with those of a shark attack.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is undergoing emergency surgery. She was identified as 19-year-old Jenna James.

Hand said the victim's sister may have witnessed the attack, and did an "excellent job" rendering aid, according to Hand.

This apparent shark attack is near the site of another shark attack in 2000.

In that case, a man jumped into Boca Ciega Bay to go swimming. A few second later, a bull shark attacked him. 69-year-old Thaddeus Kubinksi died before his wife could pull him from the water.

ST. PETE BEACH - A teen is recovering this afternoon after she was bitten by a shark in the Intracoastal waters off Boca Ciega Drive.

The 19-year-old, who was bittem in the lower right leg, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, St. Pete Beach Fire Marshall Ernie Hand said.

Firefighters received a call of an injured person in the 7100 block of Boca Ciega Drive about 3 p.m. Medics said the laceration on the girl's leg makes a shark attack the most likely source of the wound, Hand said.

"It's identical to what you'd find in a shark attack," Hand said.

The teen and her sister were swimming 10-12 yards away from a boat dock, Hand said.
