Shark attack off Azores coast
31/1/2009

A 49-year-old Spanish man was transported by the Portuguese Air Force from a vessel in the Atlantic, 205 kilometres off the Azores archipelago, after being attacked by a shark.

The man, who had been working on the Spanish fishing vessel Nuevo Cedes, was initially rescued by a Portuguese Puma helicopter after a shark bit his left forearm, 205 kilometres from Faial.

He was taken to hospital-ship Juan de la Costa, which gives medical assistance to EU fishing boats in the North Atlantic.

The man was later transferred by an ‘Avicar’ aircraft to a hospital in Ponte Delgada (São Miguel).

A medical spokesperson said the man’s condition is stable and he is “out of danger”. No vascular wounds or haemorrhaging were caused by the bite.
