Emerald Isle, N.C. — A 14-year-old girl who was likely bitten by a shark off Emerald Isle has gotten out the hospital and returned home to Sneads Ferry.

Baileigh Foster was swimming in waist-deep water when she was bitten in the foot around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A doctor at Cartert General Hospital, where Baleigh was treated, said she suffered lacerations consistent with those inflicted by a shark bite.

Baileigh said she had never thought a shark would attack her.

"It did, and I was surprised, but it's just one out of a million chances," Baileigh said.

She underwent surgery at repair ligament damage and was released from the hospital on Friday.

Doctors said they expect Baileigh to make a full recovery in time for her to play on her high-school soccer team this fall.

Baileigh said she will not be afraid to go swimming in the ocean again – but does not plan to swim at dusk again.

Shark attacks are more frequent in the early morning and evening when sharks are feeding in the dim light.

Possible shark bite in Emerald Isle waters

14-year-old in stable condition, authorities say

EMERALD ISLE - A 14-year-old girl received an apparent shark bite Wednesday night while in the water off Emerald Isle, town officials said.

The girl was bitten on the foot, causing lacerations and possible damage to ligaments and tendons and was in stable condition Thursday afternoon at Carteret General Hospital, according to information from the town.

The apparent shark bite occurred in the water in the area of the 9400 block of Emerald Isle around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Emerald Isle EMS and the Emerald Isle Fire Department responded to the scene within minutes and the child was transported to the hospital in Morehead City for medical treatment.

A doctor at Carteret General Hospital has indicated that the bite was likely inflicted by a shark, the town said.

"The Town of Emerald Isle expresses its sincere concern for the young girl and wishes her a full and speedy recovery," the town said via a news release. "We regret that this unfortunate incident occurred in Emerald Isle, but consider it an isolated, chance occurrence.

"Beach destinations are America's number one vacation choice and Emerald Isle is proud to be among the finest beach vacation areas on the East Coast. The beach is a great place to play and relax but it is also the natural habitat of abundant marine life, some of which can be dangerous to humans. Although the chances of a dangerous encounter are extremely small, it is important for beachgoers to understand this environment and be aware of potential dangers."
