A 13-year-old boy was bit by a shark this afternoon in New Smyrna Beach, but only suffered gashes on his ankle.

Volusia Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said the boy, who weighs about 150 pounds, was wading in thigh-deep water when he felt something grab his leg.

The shark took a bite and then fled. Petersohn said he did not know what kind of shark it was or how big it was because it disappeared.

Petersohn said the boy's mother took him to the hospital where he is getting stitches.

Shark chomps on ankle of Volusia teen

Staff Report
A shark bit a local boy Friday evening in New Smyrna Beach, officials said.

The 13-year-old was in thigh-deep water at the Beachway Avenue approach and was bitten one time shortly after 6 p.m., Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn said.

"He never saw what bit him," Petersohn said.

The teenager, whose name was not released, had two 3-inch cuts on his right ankle, Petersohn said, from two teeth, not two bites, he said.

He was able to walk out of the ocean and reported the bite to the toll-taker, who notified the Beach Patrol. The boy's mother drove him to Bert Fish Medical Center.

This is the second shark bite of the year, Petersohn said. The first happened in February.

"Most of these happen by the south jetty," Petersohn said. "Beachway is not too far from there."

The boy's condition was not available Friday night.
