Man hooks shark, but shark has other plans

REHOBOTH BEACH — It is not the size of the shark that matters, but the size of the bite in the shark.

A man was bit by a young sand tiger shark Aug. 20 while fishing alone at the Delaware Seashore State Park.

According to Coast Guard petty officer Charles Wakeling, the call to assist in a shark bite incident came at 7:45 p.m. to the Indian River Inlet station.

Wakeling said a man had caught a sand tiger shark, about three feet in length, while fishing in the inlet.

According to him, the man was bitten on his forearm when he tried to pick the shark up by the tail.

Wakeling said he was one of the first to respond to the call. He said he and other guardsmen put some bandages on the wound, applied direct pressure and elevated the man’s injured arm to control the bleeding.

“It was pretty good,” Wakeling said about the size of the shark bite, adding that he figured the man probably needed stitches.

Wakeling said that Delaware Seashore State Park rangers, Rehoboth Beach Fire Company and Sussex County paramedics responded after the Coast Guard.

The victim was taken to Beebe Hospital in Lewes for further treatment.
