Tonight in Rock: Fundraising at Shark Aid

The Tangier is hosting Shark Aid and it has nothing to do with saving those sometimes nasty sea dogs. Aaron Finely, a local sound engineer and musician (Rexaquarium, Kennedy, Joe Lies) was attacked by a shark last October, losing a good chunk of his leg. The medical bill is quite steep, so his friends set up this benefit concert to help out (story via Metromix). Lucky for Finely, his friends play great music. Tonight: the respected and solid folk musician, Patrick Park, the spacey, lusic and fun pop quartet,
Pink Mochi and the feel-good all American folk rock band, Charlie Wadhams.

A fixture, as of late, at The Redwood Bar downtown (he'll be there tomorrow night), garage blues band Jake LaBotz goes Westside style to Liquid Kitty. Check out his more bluesy side below:

"Getting Closer'" - Jake LaBotz

Feeling like rap and hip-hop? Go the Knitting Factory for The Pack, Compton local, Tyga and JW from Baton Rouge, who will stick around Los Angeles to visit a couple LAUSD schools in the new couple of weeks.

Continuing their Sunday night Spaceland residency is Upsilon Acrux. If you know and like the free jazz punk trio, ahem, we mean no wave band, The Flying Lutenbachers, then you'll dig these guys. Maybe a better reference is this: think of a more rock approach to what the Art Ensemble of Chicago does with jazz. Speaking of which, the Chicago jazz band plays this Saturday at REDCAT at the CalArts Creative Music Festival (disclosure, the author of this columns is a CalArts alumnus).

Beach in Wailea Closed After Shark Attack

Written by KGMB9 News - news@kgmb9.com

New details Monday about a shark attack on Maui.

Wailea Beach is closed directly in front of the Four-Seasons Resort after a man was bitten on his calf at about 3 p.m. Monday.

Lifeguards said the visitor was swimming in water about 30-feet deep.

It's unknown at this point what kind of shark took that bite.

"He was kind of laughing about it a little bit and he had good spirits," said Jeff Meadows, lifeguard in a phone interview, "We've been getting a lot of sightings lately, usually in that area the four seasons in Wailea at the point. We've been getting sightings here and there about sharks."

This latest attack comes after a sick hammerhead was spotted last week just feet from the shore in Kihei. The shark was later found dead in a gill net.

The last attack on Maui happened last May.

Peller Marion, a visitor from the mainland, was snorkeling about 25 yards off Keawakapu Beach when a large tiger shark bit her foot.

KGMB9 will have much more on Monday's attack at 10 p.m.

Wailea Beach Re-opens Following Shark Attack
Sharks: Close Encounters

By Howard Dashefsky

WAILUKU, Maui (KHNL) - A California man is recovering at Maui Memorial Hospital after an encounter while swimming off of Wailea on Maui's south shore.

32-year-old Aaron Finley says he was just enjoying the water, when it happened.

This sound engineer from West Hollywood, California will return home with all the makings of a true Hollywood story.

Right down to the bite marks in his board shorts.

Finley says he was just floating on his back alone, or so he thought, when all of a sudden.

"I felt something hit my leg really hard and turned and looked and I saw this big gray thing turn and swim away and realized I'd just been bit".

Finley says he was swimming about 30 yards off shore when the shark attacked.

He also says as quickly as the animal hit, it was gone.

"I was worried he was going to come back for more but not too worried I was just mainly trying to get back to shallow waters where he was less likely to come back".

The shark left a deep gash in his left calf, and a smaller wound in his thigh.

"The uniform characteristic is what I call catch and release, sharks bite with a force of about 6 tons per square inch so if this shark really wanted him it would have had him," said Dr. Peter Galpin, a plastic Surgeon.

Although Finley doesn't know exactly how big the shark was, experts should be able to figure it out by the size of the wound, which he describes as two half moon shaped slices.

All finley remembers, is that it was the largest thing he's ever come face to face with.

"I've seen little reef sharks like this out at Molokini but never anything that big before".

Finley says he'll return to the water upon his next visit to Hawaii saying, what are the odds of this happening once, let alone twice.

This is the third shark attack in Hawaiian waters so far this year.

On May 7th, 63-year-old Peller Marion of California was bitten by a shark while swimming off Keawakapu Beach in Kihei Maui. A 14-foot long tiger shark took a big chunk out of her right foot and calf.

Then on July 19th, 36-year-old Ohio attorney Harvey Miller was attacked by a shark while snorkeling off Bellows Field Beach Park in windward Oahu. He suffered broken bones and nerve damage.

HONOLULU—Maui officials say a shark bit a 32-year-old California man's calf while he was swimming off the beach fronting Wailea Four Seasons Resort.
Maui County officials say the swimmer was in about 30 feet of water at the time of the attack.

Maui Memorial Medical Center spokeswoman Carol Clark says the victim has a gash in his left leg but is otherwise is good condition. He's expected to have surgery.

Clark says the man's family doesn't want to release his name or hometown until they see how he's feeling Tuesday.

Authorities closed the beach shortly after the attack and have conducted water patrols.
