Shark Attack
An 18-year-old is recovering after being bitten by a shark in Volusia County.

Lifeguards say the teen was chasing a ball in about two feet of water when the shark latched onto his leg.

It happened within a half mile of the south jetty in New Smyrna Beach.

This is the 10th bite of the year in Volusia County.

"The inland jetty area, New Smyrna Beach sometimes has slightly more occurrence with sharks interacting with swimmers than the other parts of the beach, especially if there are bait pods cruising the area. We want people to refrain from swimming or swimming right in front of a lifeguard," said Captain Jack Driskell, Beach Patrol.

The teen is expected to be ok. Lifeguards say the shark likely mistook his foot as bait fish because the surf has been rough.

Shark bite at the jetties

STAFF REPORT

Stephen Munoz, 18, was helped into the emergency room at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach Thursday afternoon by Manny Batalla and Munoz's mother, Mirael Dolly.

The Sanford teen said he was in about a foot of water south of the Ponce de Leon Inlet jetties when a 2- to 3-foot shark bit him on the left foot.

Beach Patrol spokesman Capt. Scott Petersohn called the incident "a pretty typical New Smyrna Beach shark bite" where there was bait in the surf and murky water.

Thursday's incident is the 10th bite of the year.
