Shark bites teenage boy at seashore

Brevard County -- A teenage boy was bitten by a shark Saturday afternoon while swimming near a beach at the Canaveral National Seashore, authorities said.

The boy, who was not identified, was taken by helicopter to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children after authorities determined the bite was severe.

The boy was bitten on his left calf, said Orlando Dominguez, a spokesman for Brevard County Fire-Rescue. It appeared the shark took the boy's leg into its mouth, bit and scraped down the leg and released, Dominguez said.

The bite happened about 1 p.m. at Playalinda Beach, near Titusville, when the boy was swimming with his mother. His mother told authorities she saw him go under the water to his neck and then he screamed.

He was taken to Parrish Medical Center in Titusville by ambulance and later transported to Orlando in stable condition.

Amy C. Rippel and Martin E. Comas of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report.

Teen Bitten By Shark
A young teen is recovering Sunday after being bitten by a shark in the waters off Brevard County.

The 13 or 14-year-old was surfing at Playalinda Beach Saturday when witnesses say he began to scream for help.

Tourists along the water hopped in and pulled the boy to safety, but the damage had already been done.

Rocky Vitale said: "We saw him yelling and we thought he was talking to the surf at first getting pulled back out or something. So me and my brother went out to help him and found he had been bitten by a shark, and he was bleeding pretty bad from his leg."

The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital Saturday night.

His name has not been released.

This is the third shark bite of the year along the Brevard County coast.

Shark Attacked Teen, Mauled Leg

POSTED: 12:36 am EDT July 9, 2006
UPDATED: 1:03 am EDT July 9, 2006

PLAYALINDA BEACH, Fla. -- Saturday night, doctors at an Orlando hospital were trying to save the leg of a 14-year-old boy, who had been badly mauled by a shark.

That afternoon, the boy was swimming in the ocean off Playalinda Beach, east of Titusville, when he was attacked.

His screams attracted attention from the people onshore.

“We heard him yelling,” Rocky Vitale told Channel 9 Eyewitness News. “At first, we thought he was stuck in the surf. We ran out to help him and found out he had been bit by a shark, and he was bleeding pretty bad from his leg wounds.”

Rescue crews determined the shark had torn through much of the boy’s calf and Achilles tendon. Rescuers did say the boy was conscious and talking once he was brought onshore. He was taken to Parrish Medical Center by medical helicopter. A couple of hours later, a second helicopter took him to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.

Authorities did not release the boy’s name. There’s also no word on what, if anything, may have provoked the attack.
