Shark bites spear fisher in reef shark incident in Western Australia
A man is being treated in hospital after being bitten by what is believed to be a reef shark.
It is understood that the Perth man was spearfishing with a friend at South Passage just south of Coral Bay when he was bitten on the hand.
The incident occurred about 2km offshore late this afternoon.
A St John Ambulance spokesperson said the man was picked up about 3.30pm and taken to Coral Bay nursing post, where he is undergoing treatment for his injury, which is believed to be minor.
“Department of Fisheries officers are working closely with rangers from the Department of Parks and Wildlife to investigate what happened,” the Department of Fisheries said in a statement released this evening.
Thursday afternoon when he was bitten about 2km offshore.
That is not a shark attack, it’s a human stupidity attack. Holding a bleeding fish in the water when there any type of shark around is just stupid. Experianced spear fishermen know better than this.
We are trying to educate. Everyone is trying to say sharks are harmless. At times they are and times they’re not. The only way to learn is from them with first hand experiences.
I couldn’t agree with you more Al! They are like any wild animal, and should be treated with same kind of respect you would give any apex predator (tiger, bear, Lion, alligator etc.)
After dealing with hundreds of injury survivors, non injury occurrences and witnesses to fatal incidents. There is no way we can know what they knew at the time of the incident. The ocean is fairly new to us land based predators so every piece of information on oceans and its predators could be useful and be shared.
At Shark Attack Survivors we do focus on the ugliest side of sharks, because we are the few who have been involved in the ugliest shark experiences and know valuable information we have shared is not reaching you (ocean goers).
Al Brenneka
I want to thank you for all you do to help survivors and the public ocean goers. I appreciate everything you do. I believe strongly in your mission, so strongly that I created an app (SharkBytes) to help get the information out there even more. But if it wasn’t for yours and GSAF hard work, research and dedication I wouldn’t have to information to use for my app. So thank you again!
