Possible shark attack victim identified

DESTIN — The mother of a 12-year-old boy who was possibly bitten by a shark told emergency responders she heard her son scream and then run towards her cradling his arm Saturday around 3:30 p.m.

Zachary Tyke Standridge, of Madisonville, Tenn., had two bite marks to his lower arm that went down to his bone, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office offense report.

“It was not an amputation, but a pretty significant-sized laceration,” said Capt. Mark Hutchinson with the Destin Fire Department.

His mother, Katie Renee Standridge said her son was playing in knee-deep water near Silver Beach Towers.
Zachary told her “a shark bit him” after he came out of the water, the report said.

At the time, there were double red flags flying indicating the water was closed, the report said.

Destin Fire Department paramedics told officials the marks were consistent with a shark bike, the report said.

Zachary was taken to the pool area of Silver Beach Towers where he received immediate medical attention. He was then taken by EMS to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment.

“He never lost consciousness and he was able to talk to us the whole time,” Hutchinson said.

His current condition is unavailable.

According to the report, the case is closed.

A shark attack was reported in Pensacola last month when a man was bitten in the foot while swimming in 10- to 12-feet of water. A 7-year-old boy was injured Sept. 25 in Panama City Beach when he received puncture wounds and a gash on his ankle while wading in shallow waters.

DESTIN — Firefighters believe a shark bit a boy in the arm while he was wading in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday afternoon.

“It was a younger male about knee deep in the surf, and he appeared to have what seemed consistent with a shark bite,” Capt. Mark Hutchinson said. “It was not an amputation, but a pretty significant sized laceration.”

The boy was bitten in the right forearm behind Silver Beach Towers about 3:35 p.m. The victim was 10 to 12 years old, Hutchinson said. He was taken by ambulance to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

Hutchinson said the boy was in good spirits and was accompanied by his parents.

The victim was not identified.

“He never lost consciousness and he was able to talk to us the whole time,” Hutchinson said.

It was the first incident of its kind for Hutchinson, who has worked for the Destin Fire Control District for 17 years.

A shark attack was reported in Pensacola last month when a man was bitten in the foot while swimming 10 to 12 feet of water.
